Emerson Opdycke made a habit of timely interventions. It was his brigade that reached Spring Hill in time to repulse Forrest’s troopers. Now, at Franklin, his men would plug the gap opened in the Union line. They were only able to do so because Opdycke had apparently refused to align his men with the rest of Wagner’s brigade in front of the defensive works. (LOC, LC-B813-1965A)

Schofield was urged by some of his officers to launch a counterattack the following day, but he stuck to his original plan of withdrawing his men to Nashville. Hood, remarkably, put plans in place for a second full-scale assault the next day, and had Schofield stood his ground he may well have broken the Army of Tennessee. As it was, the attempt to prevent Union forces from converging on Nashville had failed, but Hood was still not ready to change his strategy.
